Labuan Bajo Celebrates World Ocean Day 2024 with Community Clean-Up

On June 7th, 2024, the Labuan Bajo community came together to celebrate World Ocean Day with a large-scale underwater and surface clean-up event. Azul Komodo, representing DOCK (Dive Operators Collaborative Komodo) along with other members, collected an impressive 1.4 tonnes of debris. We were proud to participate alongside over 200 volunteers from various government agencies, NGOs, dive shops, and local neighborhoods, all working together to remove marine debris and protect the region’s precious ecosystems.

    We’re Proud Members of DOCK

Azul represented the clean-up in support of DOCK, Green Fins, and PADI Eco Center™️ initiatives. The Dive Operators Collaborative of Komodo (DOCK) is dedicated to the Komodo National Park and its Marine Environment. Their ethic is one of safety, professionalism, and environmental and social sustainability. DOCK members have agreed to stricter guidelines to ensure that operations are compliant with international best practices, and above and beyond the required standards in this vibrant and rapidly developing destination.

Catalyzing Action for Our Ocean & Climate

This year’s World Ocean Day theme, “Catalyzing Action for Our Ocean & Climate,” emphasizes the urgent need for collective action to address the intertwined challenges of ocean health and the climate crisis. The Labuan Bajo clean-up served as a powerful example of how local initiatives can contribute to this global effort, making a tangible difference in the fight for a more sustainable future.

Throughout the day, divers scoured the reefs at three different sites, carefully removing debris from the underwater environment. At the same time, shore crews worked to collect waste along the coastline, ensuring a thorough and comprehensive clean-up effort. The dedication and enthusiasm of all participants were truly inspiring, highlighting the strength and resilience of the Labuan Bajo community.

The impact of this event extends beyond the immediate results of the clean-up. By coming together and taking action, the community is raising awareness about the importance of ocean conservation and the need for bold, transformative solutions to the climate crisis. From transitioning to clean energy to expanding marine protected areas, there are many steps that decision-makers at all levels can take to create a more sustainable future.

The Power of Collaboration: Act locally, Think Globally

The Labuan Bajo clean-up showcases the power of collaboration and the potential for local actions to have a global impact. By working together, supporting one another, and staying engaged, communities like Labuan Bajo can play a vital role in catalyzing the change we need to see in the world.

As we move forward from this successful World Ocean Day event, it’s essential to keep the momentum going. Whether it’s participating in future clean-ups, spreading awareness about ocean conservation, or advocating for environmentally-friendly policies, every action counts. By continuing to work together, the Labuan Bajo community can help protect the region’s unique marine ecosystems and contribute to the global fight against the climate crisis.

Organizers added: “We were able to lift 1.400+ kg of trash today! Kudos to us! Thanks for all the support!! 🤿🙏🏼💪🏼”
